The Kentucky State Poetry society is a non-profit organization founded in 1966 to promote the writing and enjoyment of
poetry.  As such, KSPS sponsors an annual poetry contest for youth, grades 3 through 12.  The categories listed below carry
a cash prize for first, second and third place for each category.  Honorable mentions, presented at the discretion of the
judge, will be recognized with a certificate. First place winning poems will be published in the Prize Poems issue (published
each Fall) of Pegasus, the official publication of the Kentucky State Poetry Society.  First, second and third place winning
poets in the Student Contest will be invited to read their winning poem at the
KSPS Awards Banquet, held annually in
October.
While the 2009 Student Contest has concluded, the contest categories below are consistent from year
to year, and students are encouraged to continue to write throughout the year.

The KSPS adult poetry contest is an open contest with the exception of the Chaffin/Kash Award category, which is reserved for
KSPS members.  With the exception of the Grand Prix and the Chaffin/Kash Award categories, other contest categories are,
depending upon sponsors, subject to change each year.  KSPS members also enjoy a discounted entry fee rate for all
categories (other than the Grand Prix and the Chaffin/Kash Award).  The contest brochure is made available in the Spring of
each year with a deadline of June 30th.  Members receive the Contest Brochure in the Spring edition of the KSPS newsletter.
KSPS members receive a winners list with their Fall newsletter; all others may obtain winners list from either the website or by
request via postal carrier
